From A-Frames to 59Fifty: A Baseball Hat Style Primer

Baseball hats are both a form of self-expression and an eye-catching accessory. Wearing a fitted LA Dodgers hat could be a statement of pride, and a limited-time design could be the perfect addition to your streetwear style—a collector’s item that’s the envy of other fans or collectors. From the New Era 59FIFTY to the A-frame hat, there are a few popular hat styles that you should know when choosing your next piece of statement-making headwear.

The 59FIFTY

The New Era 59FIFTY is the hat that does it all. It’s a legendary design in streetwear and sports culture, and you can’t talk about fitted hats without mentioning the impact the 59FIFTY has had on the headwear industry. They’re worn worldwide. You can find them with the logo of your favorite team in practically every American sports league. They’re even the fitted MLB hats the pros wear on the field. Why is this hat so popular? The high-quality materials and timeless structure make it a universal choice for ultimate comfort. When you find your ideal size, a 59FIFTY hat gives you the feeling of a tailored fit. Plus, the silhouette is versatile enough for limited-edition, so you can discover all sorts of alternate colorways and unique designs. If you’re looking for the gold standard in headwear, look no further than the New Era 59FIFTY.

The 9FIFTY

The 59Fifty isn’t the only famous New Era silhouette. The 9FIFTY is a retro-inspired snapback design that echoes the classic adjustable hats of the 1980s, with a squared-off visor and tapered back opening. They aren’t the only brand making snapback hats, but they may have perfected it. It retains the same flat brim and structured crown as the 59FIFTY. However, unlike the 59FIFTY, it comes with a one-size-fits-all design and a plastic snapback closure. Go with fitted black hats if you’re confident in your head size, but if you want to ease into New Era’s hats, the adjustable fit of 9FIFTY is an excellent starting point.

A-Frame Hats

A good way to visualize an A-frame hat is to think of it as a trucker-style hat without the mesh in the back. It has a distinctive structure with a higher peak than a 59FIFTY, giving it a more triangular shape than a typical hat’s round shape in the front. It has just one front panel made up of two crown panels merged together. New Era also makes A-frame hats, known as 9FORTY hats. That said, the name hasn’t become quite as synonymous with the A-frame silhouette as the 59FIFTY has with fitted hats. Again, if you want an adjustable fit, A-frame hats deliver with a snapback or Velcro closure.

Strapbacks

Strapbacks are often less structured and offer a more relaxed design overall. Unsurprisingly, they come with an adjustable strap closure on the back of the hat. Unlike snapbacks, however, it’s usually a fabric strap with a clasp instead of two pieces of plastic that snap together. You might find the fabric more comfortable than a snapback, so the choice is up to you. If you’re looking for a dad hat style to add to your collection, you can’t go wrong with a strapback.
